Three Triple Crown champions from three different eras inspired the names of this year's teams.
1937 Triple Crown Champion
A son of the legendary Man o' War, War Admiral became the fourth American Triple Crown winner. He was smaller than many of his rivals but was known for exceptional speed, fierce competitiveness, and a career that included 21 victories from 26 starts. His famous 1938 match race against Seabiscuit remains one of racing's most celebrated events.
1973 Triple Crown Champion
Known around the world as “Big Red,” Secretariat ended a 25-year Triple Crown drought in 1973. His 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes remains one of the most extraordinary performances in sports history, and his record time of 2:24 still stands.
2015 Triple Crown Champion
American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, ending a 37-year wait. He later won the Breeders' Cup Classic, becoming the first horse to complete what became known as racing's Grand Slam: the Triple Crown plus the Classic.
